Towards Ecocentric Culture
Currently, our western governance systems, laws and culture reflect a destructive, anthropocentric worldview. This diverse presentation will highlight the importance of understanding how these underlying philosophies and ideologies continue to influence and shape the world around us, which has lead to, amongst other things, the rampant exploitation of non-human animals and severe ecological degradation. It will dissect some of our current human-centred laws and policies and offer alternatives and solutions based on Earth-centred (Ecocentric) philosophies. Scott will discuss the role of Earth Jurisprudence, an emerging ecological theory of law, and the transformative role it can have in creating a world in which be acknowledge and value our interdependent and interconnected relationship with this planet and all members of the Earth Community.
